NILGIRI LANGUR

NILGIRI LANGUR

Nilgiri Langur.....a beautiful langur with glossy black fur on the body and golden brown fur on the head. Its a shy monkey and you have to work a bit to photograph it. It is found in the western ghats, primarily in south India. They belong to the old world monkey family and can live upto 29 years of age. Their range also includes Kodagu in Karnataka, Kodayar Hills in Tamil Nadu, and many other hilly areas in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These primates live in tropical moist forests.

The Nilgiri langur is a diurnal and arboreal species. They live in groups of nine to ten monkeys and are quite gregarious. Each flock may consist of numerous males and females, one male and several females, or one or more lone males. The social position of Nilgiri langurs is extremely essential, especially for males. The dominant female establishes her control by selecting favoured feeding and resting areas. The troop's travelling path and schedule will be dictated by the dominant male, as will the freedom of choice in daily life. The majority of Nilgiri langurs' time is spent foraging. They spend the rest of their time grooming, pursuing, watching, or fighting. These animals primarily communicate by vocalisations, but they also use touch and visual cues.
