A large beauty of a bird ranges from 95 - 105 CM and resident of Himalayas, North east India, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Western Ghats. Big size and massive yellow casque and bill, and white tail with black subterminal band. Has black face band contrasting with yellowish-white named, neck and upper breast. In flight, shows broad whitish wing-bar and trailing edge to wing. Neck, breast, white wing -bars and base of tail typically stained yellow with preen gland oils. male has red Irish, black circumorbital skin , and black at each end of casque. Female slightly smaller. Sexes alike.
In pairs, or small parties, occasionally large flocks, mostly arboreal, feeding on fruiting trees, plucking fruits with tip of bill, tossing it up, catching it in the throat and swallowing, may settle on ground to pick up fallen fruit, noisy flight, alternation of flapping and gliding, less undulating than in other hornbills.
