MALABAR PIED HORNBILL
Size is 92 CM and scarce endemic breeding resident in foothills of western and eastern Ghats and Sri Lanka, where commoner, probably overlaps in NC India with the oriental pied.
Habitat is Open forests and growth, particularly ficus and other fruiting trees on hillside.
Striking, medium sized, with large creamish bill and very prominent black and yellow casque. Black head and neck ; black orbital skin, white eye ring, black white-tipped wings, white underparts. Female smaller with pale blue orbital skin that turns pinkish during breeding. Very similar to oriental pied but distinguished by broad white outer outer-tail feathers and broader wing tips.
